This year marks the 150th anniversary of the tree planter’s holiday, known as National Arbor Day. The City of Midlothian Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating with a free tree giveaway on Saturday, April 23, at Community Park Phase 2 (3601 S. 14th Street) from 8 to 10 a.m., or while supplies last.
Members of the Texas Master Naturalists, Indian Trail Chapter, will be stationed near the sand volleyball courts to hand out the trees and provide planting and care instructions.
In addition to beautifying the landscape, planting trees increases the foliage canopy, which helps to cool the surroundings. Each mature tree also absorbs approximately 31 pounds of carbon dioxide, promoting cleaner air.
Other ways you can celebrate National Arbor Day, which falls on April 29, can be found on the Arbor Day Foundation website (see link below).
The tree giveaway is made possible through funding from Midlothian Community Development Corporation.
